In a true black eye for baseball, MLB’s highlight game was held last night in the armpit of the universe known as Yankee Stadium, which was packed with some 60,000 drunken lunatics who hardly understand the rules of the game. And, to their continuing agony, Terry Francona was the winning manager and J.D. Drew was MVP. ARod was 0-2 out on a date with Liza Minelli long before the game ended.
It was fitting, if pathetic, that the Yankees tried to copy the Red Sox wonderful All-Star celebration in 1999, widely known as the best ever. The climax of that celebration was when Ted Williams, war hero and perhaps the greatest hitter of all time, was driven out on the field. The climax of this celebration was bringing convicted felon George Steinbrenner on the field. COTGM previously reported that Steinbrenner was dead. We stand by the story.
With all Yankees out of the way, the A.L. was able to pull out another victory, securing home field for the Red Sox in the World Series. Yankees fans appeared to be too involved in their infantile chants to realize the bittersweet irony.
“It was a good win,” said Terry Francona. “I think we were all spooked and in a state of shock from when they wheeled George out onto the field. At first I thought it was something from the wax museum. Once we got the chills out we played fine.”
