Sox Management Incredulous as Angels' Gary Matthews Jr. Calls Yankees' Fans "More Couth" than Sox Fans
The comments were somewhat shocking. One would think that steroid abuser Gary Matthews Jr. would be more worried about protecting his own tarnished reputation (if you can tarnish the reputation garnered in a thoroughly mediocre career playing for seven different teams), but his recent comments about Red Sox fans have Sox management scratching their collective heads.
To be helpful, Call of the Green Monster will break down Matthew’s actual comments about Red Sox fans, and add helpful commentary.
“They're loud, they're drunk, they're obnoxious." Since he’s an outfielder he’s referring to the bleacher fans, so this point seems to belabor the obvious. Though while in Fenway, he would be referring to several of the fans, in Yankee Stadium 100% of the fans 100% of the time are drunk and obnoxious, not just in the bleachers but throughout the park.
"They're one of the few places you'll hear racial comments . . . it's just different." We’re not sure if he’s referring to the Dennis and Callahan show here, but rest assured braindead racists reside everywhere—though we would hope they would, literally, be a dying breed.
And finally, the coup de grace. "It's different from New York. Yankee fans are passionate about their teams, but they're a little more couth. They have a little more class than Boston fans. At least in New York they appreciate guys who play the game hard and play the game right and they let you know it.”
In an exclusive interview with Call of the Green Monster, Larry Lucchino weighed in on this one. “All I can say is: Has the man ever actually been in Yankee Stadium?” a puzzled Lucchino asked. “Walk through Yankee Stadium, and if you can find one person, one person, in the park who knows what the word ‘couth’ means, I’ll hand them the keys to my Mercedes.”
Lucchino acknowledges there is certainly a degree of drunken obnoxiousness at Fenway, but maintained it pales in comparison to the horrors of Yankee Stadium. “They are far more drunk and obnoxious than our fans,” he maintained. “Sure, our fans booed Johnny Damon, but they booed World Series hero David Wells…hell, they booed Roger Clemens off the mound a couple of weeks ago, much to my delight. But beyond that, you hear the rumors of what goes on in those bleachers. I don’t think it’s ever been confirmed, but ritualistic sacrifice, cannibalism…yikes! I’ve never witnessed it personally, but when you hear a story enough times, where there’s smoke there’s fire. And let’s be clear: cannibalism is not couth.”
